She is a witch-like old woman who visits children. This happens on Epiphany Eve, which is the night of January 5. She is a very mysterious character. People have many different ideas about who she is. Some see her as a kind grandmother. Others see her as a scary hag.

She is a figure of both national and folk culture. Many people in Italy know her name and her stories.

Her visit follows a very specific way. She flies through the air on a broomstick. She often rides her broom backwards. To enter a house, she goes down the chimney. This leaves her face covered in dark soot.

She carries a large bag or a basket. This bag is filled with gifts or treats. She brings sweets and toys to good children. However, she brings coal or cinders to naughty children. In some parts of Sicily, she might even leave a stick in a stocking.

Scholars are not entirely sure where the Befana began. Some believe she is a personification of the Epiphany feast. They think medieval Christians created her to represent the holiday. Others, like the researcher Jacob Grimm, had a different idea. He thought she might be a pre-Christian figure. Some people suggest she was once a goddess. They link her to Roman, Celtic, or even Neolithic cultures.

Her origins remain a subject of much debate.

There are many famous legends about her life. One Christian story involves the Three Wise Men. They asked the Befana for directions to find the Baby Jesus. She was too busy with her housework to help them. Later, she felt guilty and tried to find him. She followed a bright star but could not find the child.

Because of this, she is said to still be searching today. She leaves gifts for children because the Christ Child is in everyone.

In many parts of Italy, people celebrate with special customs. In Tuscany, people call these celebrations the Befanata. In places like Umbria and Lazio, they use different names. Groups of men called befanotti travel from house to house.
