The Biblical Magi are famous figures from a story in the Bible.

They appear in the Gospel of Matthew as visitors from a far land. These travelers came to worship Jesus after his birth.

They brought three special gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Many people call them the Three Wise Men or the Three Kings. These names help people remember their important visit. In Western Christianity, they are celebrated on the feast of Epiphany. In Eastern Christianity, they are remembered on Christmas day.

The story tells us how their journey began. The Magi saw a star in the east.

This star led them to find the child. The Bible does not say exactly when they arrived. Some people think they came in the same winter as the birth. Other traditions say the visit happened up to two winters later. This timing might explain why King Herod ordered a massacre of young boys. Most art shows them arriving at a house rather than a stable. This is a common way for artists to show the story.

The word "Magi" has a very old history.

It comes from an old Persian word for a group of priests. These priests studied the stars very closely. At that time, studying stars was seen as a science. This is why some people call the Magi astrologers. Because of this, the word even helped create the English word "magic." While the Bible does not call them kings, many people later did. This idea came from old religious writings that said kings would worship the Messiah.

We do not know the real names of the Magi from the Bible.

However, many traditions have given them names over the years. In the West, they are often called Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar. These names first appeared in records from the eighth century. One old text describes Melchior as an old man with white hair. It says Caspar was a young man without a beard. Balthazar is described as having dark hair and a full beard. In Syrian traditions, they have different names like Larvandad, Gushnasaph, and Hormisdas.

Today, the Magi are symbols used in many different ways.

Artists have painted them in many styles for hundreds of years. You can see them in beautiful mosaics and stained glass windows. Some scholars believe the Magi are legendary figures rather than real people. Even so, they remain important in many religious communities. They are often honored as saints or martyrs. Their story continues to inspire many new artworks and customs around the world.
