The word comes from the Greek word "epiphaneia." This means a manifestation or an appearance. In the past, people used this word to describe the dawn or a god appearing to a person. Today, the holiday celebrates how Jesus was shown to the world.

In Western Christianity, the feast focuses mostly on the visit of the Magi.

These wise men traveled to find the child Jesus. Because of this, some people call the day Three Kings' Day. Others call it Little Christmas. The Magi represent people from all over the world. Their visit is seen as a revelation to the Gentiles. This means the news of Jesus was being shown to non-Jewish people.

Eastern Christians have a different way of celebrating.

They often call the feast Theophany. This name also means a manifestation of a divine being. They focus on the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. They believe this event showed him to the world as the Son of God. Some traditions also remember the wedding at Cana. In these traditions, the feast is a way to honor Jesus's appearance to all.

History shows that this holiday has changed over a long time.

The earliest mention of Epiphany as a feast was in AD 361. In the early days, some groups celebrated the birth and the baptism together. A person named Epiphanius of Salamis said January 6 was both the birthday and the Epiphany. By the year 354, the Western Church began to celebrate Christmas on December 25. This left January 6 to focus on the Magi and the baptism. The Armenian Apostolic Church still celebrates the birth on January 6.

Many people follow interesting customs to mark the day.

Some people eat Three Kings Cake or go winter swimming. Others might use chalk to mark their doors or have their houses blessed. In many places, people take down Christmas decorations on Epiphany Eve, which is January 5. This day is also called Twelfth Night. The traditional date for the feast is January 6. However, some Eastern Churches use the Julian calendar. They celebrate on January 19 because of a 13-day difference.
