The New Testament lists him in the fifth place among the apostles. He was from the town of Bethsaida. This was the same town as Peter and Andrew. The Gospel of John says Jesus called Philip directly. Philip was also the person who introduced Nathanael to Jesus.

He is a very important figure in these early religious stories.

Philip's life involved much traveling and teaching. Many traditions say he preached in Greece, Syria, and Asia Minor. Some stories say he traveled with his sister, Mariamne. He may have been able to speak Greek. This would have helped him talk to Greek pilgrims in Jerusalem. During the Last Supper, Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father. This gave Jesus a chance to teach about unity.

He is often linked to the Greek community in these accounts.

Early history gives us many details about his family life. The historian Eusebius wrote about these traditions. He cited Clement of Alexandria, who said Philip was married. Philip had three daughters according to some sources. One tradition says he was buried in Hieropolis with two daughters. The third daughter was said to be buried in Ephesus.

These stories help people understand how he lived his life.

There are different accounts of how Philip died. Some people call him a martyr. A martyr is someone who dies for their beliefs. The Acts of Philip tells a story about his death in Hierapolis. This account says he was crucified upside-down. It also says he preached even while on the cross. Other stories say he died by beheading instead.

These accounts are part of the many traditions surrounding him.

Many different churches honor Philip today. The Eastern Orthodox Church has a primary feast day on November 14. This day also starts a time called the Philippian Fast. In the Roman Rite, his feast day is on May 3. His relics are kept in Rome and in New York.

People also use symbols to represent him. These include a cross with two loaves of bread. He is even the patron saint of hatters.
