Saint Peter was a very important figure in the early Christian Church.

He was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus. Many people in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions see him as a great leader. Some believe he was the first bishop of Rome, also called the pope. Others say he was the first bishop of Antioch. He is a major saint for many ancient Christian churches today.

Before he became a leader, Peter lived a very different life.

He was a Jewish fisherman born in a place called Bethsaida. He worked on the water with his brother, Andrew. The Bible says he might have been married or a widower. Some stories even mention his mother-in-law lived in Capernaum. One famous story says Jesus healed her at their home.

His original name was Simon, the son of Jonah. Jesus gave him a new name, Cephas, which comes from Aramaic. In Greek, this name is written as Peter. The meaning of this name is a bit of a mystery. Some say it means a rock or a crag. Others think it means a precious stone or a jewel. Most scholars think the name shows he had a tough character.

Many stories in the New Testament describe Peter's actions.

He is known for walking on water with Jesus for a short time. He also had a vision about food that helped the early church. This vision helped people decide to share their faith with others. Peter was once put in prison by King Herod Agrippa. The book of Acts says an angel helped him escape.

History and tradition tell us about his final years.

Many early historians believe Peter spent his last years in Rome. They say he worked with Paul to start the church there. Christian tradition holds that he died in Rome under Emperor Nero. Some say he was martyred on Vatican Hill. Even today, many people visit places that were once linked to him. His life remains a central part of Christian history and belief.
