His name, Andrew, is Greek rather than Hebrew. This suggests his family might have been open to different cultures. Andrew worked as a fisherman along the Sea of Galilee. His brother was Simon Peter, who was also a fisherman.

Andrew's life changed when he met Jesus. Before this, Andrew was a follower of John the Baptist. The Gospel of John says Andrew recognized Jesus as the Messiah. He was so excited that he quickly introduced his brother, Peter, to him.

Because he was among the first to follow, the Eastern Orthodox Church calls him "the first-called." He was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus. Andrew was present at many important moments, including the Last Supper. He even helped a man bring a boy with loaves and fishes to Jesus.

After the time of Jesus, Andrew traveled to many different lands to preach. Some historical accounts say he traveled to Scythia and near the Black Sea. A 12th-century chronicle says he visited the area of Crimea. Legend says he even reached the place that became the city of Kievan Rus'.

He is also linked to the city of Byzantium. Tradition says he founded a church center there in 38 AD. He installed a man named Stachys as the first bishop. This made Andrew a patron saint of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Andrew's life ended in a city called Patras in Achaea. It is said he died by crucifixion around AD 60.

Some early texts say he was tied to a cross. However, a famous tradition says he used an X-shaped cross. This shape is called a saltire or a Saint Andrew's Cross. People believe he chose this shape because he did not feel worthy of the same cross used for Jesus. This X-shape is still a very famous symbol today.

Some relics, like his skull, have traveled between many different countries over hundreds of years. In 1964, the Pope even returned a relic to the city of Patras. These traditions help keep the story of Andrew alive for people today.
