Many scholars today believe he was also known as Nathanael. This name appears in the Gospel of John. He is listed in the three Synoptic Gospels, which are Matthew, Mark, and Luke. He is also mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. These ancient writings help us understand his role in early history.

Tradition tells us that Bartholomew traveled to many faraway places. Some stories say he went on a mission to India. He may have left a copy of the Gospel of Matthew there. Other accounts say he served as a missionary in Mesopotamia and Parthia. He might have visited Lycaonia and Ethiopia as well. Some researchers believe he worked along the Konkan coast in India. They look at ancient cities like Kalyan to find where he traveled.

Bartholomew is very important to the history of Armenia. He and another apostle named Jude are said to have brought Christianity there. Because of this, the Armenian kingdom became the first state to make Christianity its official religion in 301. He is even considered a patron saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Some traditions call him the second Catholicos-Patriarch of that church. This shows how much his work influenced that part of the world. His legacy is still tied to Armenian history today.

Bartholomew was a martyr, which means he died for his religious beliefs. Different stories describe how this happened. One account says he was kidnapped and cast into the sea. Another tradition says he was killed in Albanopolis, Armenia. In this story, a man named Prince Astyages ordered his death. Some accounts say he was flayed, which means his skin was removed.
