Matthias was a man chosen to be one of the twelve apostles. An apostle is a leader in the early Christian faith. He joined this group of leaders after Judas Iscariot left.

Matthias's selection is a very unique event in history. It happened after Jesus ascended into Heaven. The followers of Jesus needed to find a replacement. They wanted someone who could join their important ministry. This task was given to the group of disciples.

To choose the new leader, the followers followed a specific way. First, they gathered together to find a replacement. There were about 120 people in this group. Peter suggested they nominate two different men. They chose Joseph, who was also called Barsabbas. The other man chosen was Matthias.

They prayed to God to show them his choice. Then they cast lots to make the final decision. The lot fell to Matthias, making him an apostle.

History tells us many different things about Matthias. The three synoptic gospels do not name him as a follower. However, the book of Acts says he was there for a long time. It says he was with Jesus from the time of John's baptism.

Some people have different names for him in old writings. A Syriac version calls him Tolmai. Other writers have suggested he might be someone else, like Zacchaeus or Barnabas. These different names show how much people have wondered about him.

Stories about where Matthias traveled are often hard to agree on. Some Greek traditions say he spread his message near the Caspian Sea. He might have lived near the port of Hyssus.

Other stories say he preached in Ethiopia or in the land of Colchis. Colchis is part of modern-day Georgia. Some people believe he is buried at a Roman fortress in Gonio. Other traditions say he died in Jerusalem. Some say he died of old age, while others say he was killed for his faith.

Many different churches around the world still honor Matthias today. They have special feast days to remember him. The date for these days changes depending on the tradition. Some churches celebrate in February. Others choose to celebrate in May or even in August.

People also hold special relics, which are items from his life. Some believe his remains were brought to Rome or Germany. Others believe they are in Georgia. These many stories show how much his life still matters to people.
