Matthias was a man chosen to be an apostle. An apostle is a leader in the early Christian faith. He joined the group of twelve leaders after Judas left.

Some stories say Matthias knew Jesus for a long time. He may have been there from the start. To pick a new leader, the group chose two men. They prayed and cast lots to decide. This is a way to let God choose. The lot fell to Matthias. He then became one of the twelve apostles.

Different traditions tell different stories about his life. Some say he traveled to lands like Ethiopia. Others say he preached near the Caspian Sea. There are many ideas about how he died. Some say he died of old age in Jerusalem. Other stories say he was killed for his faith.

Many churches still honor Matthias today. They have special feast days to remember him. Some celebrate in February. Others celebrate in May or August. People have even kept his remains in special places. Some believe his bones are in Italy or Germany. Others think he is buried in Georgia.
