Mary Magdalene was a real person from long ago.

Most historians believe she lived during the first century. Her name likely means she came from Magdala. This was a fishing town near the Sea of Galilee. Because Mary was a common name, people added "Magdalene" to identify her.

Many people believe she was a very close follower of Jesus. The Gospels say Jesus healed her from seven demons. This healing might have been a very difficult time for her. This event likely led to her strong devotion to his work.

Mary was a very important part of Jesus's ministry.

The Gospels show that she was often the first woman listed in groups. This suggests she held a high position among the female followers. She was likely quite wealthy, too. She used her own money to help support the work of Jesus. Some scholars say her role was similar to that of Simon Peter. She was a vital leader among the women who traveled with him.

Mary Magdalene was a witness to some very serious events.

The four canonical Gospels agree that she saw the crucifixion of Jesus. She also watched as his body was taken to a tomb.

Some historians believe the women stayed because they were very brave. They remained even when the male disciples had fled. After the burial, Mary went to the tomb early in the morning. She was one of the first people to find the tomb empty.

Different religious groups have different stories about her discovery.

In the Gospel of Mark, she finds a young man in white. The Gospel of Luke says she saw an angel. Some stories even say she saw the risen Jesus himself. These accounts show how important her experience was to early believers. Because of these stories, she is often called the "Apostle to the Apostles." Her role is seen as a way to show that women were key witnesses.

Over hundreds of years, people's views of Mary have changed.

In the year 591, Pope Gregory I gave a sermon that changed her image. He suggested she was a repentant sinner, though the Bible does not say this. However, the Eastern Orthodox Church has always seen her as a virtuous leader. They call her "Equal to the Apostles." Today, many people look at her as a spiritually insightful figure. Her story continues to inspire many different ways of thinking about faith.
