She lived during the early or middle part of the 12th century. Trota studied at the Schola Medica Salernitana. This was a very special place in southern Italy. It was the first medical school in Europe that allowed women to study. She was part of a group of women physicians there. Her medical fame eventually spread to places like France and England. This shows how much people respected her knowledge back then.

Trota wrote about many different ways to stay healthy. One of her main books is called the Practica secundum Trotam. This book covers many topics, such as fevers and wounds. It even gives advice on how to treat snakebites. She also wrote about how to care for the body. This included tips on cleaning teeth and caring for hair. She suggested using exercise, a good diet, and cleanliness to live a long life. She even shared ideas on how to use make-up and remove unwanted hair.

Trota had some very bold ideas for her time. She believed that both men and women were responsible for making babies. This was a daring statement about how life begins. In the 12th century, this idea caused a lot of controversy. Most people did not agree with her view on conception. Her writings also helped educate male doctors. At that time, most medical books were written only by men. These men often had no experience treating women. Trota's work helped teach them about the female body.

For a long time, people forgot the real Trota. They mistakenly believed a person named "Trotula" wrote a famous set of books. The name Trotula was actually a misunderstanding of her real name. This mistake caused many people to lose track of her true identity. They even forgot her gender and her level of education. Her real work was lost until it was found again in the late 20th century.

Historian John F. Benton found a text in a Madrid manuscript in 1985. Later, Monica H. Green found another copy in Oxford. These discoveries helped scholars separate the real woman from the name Trotula.

Understanding Trota helps us see how medicine has changed. Her work paved the way for how doctors treat women today. We can see her influence in the many copies of her texts. There are nearly 140 copies of the original Latin books. There are also about 60 copies of translations in other languages.
