Salerno is the second largest city in its region. As of 2025, it has 125,958 inhabitants. The city is divided into three different parts. There is a medieval center, a 19th-century area, and newer residential zones with apartment blocks.

Learning has always been a huge part of life in Salerno. In the early Middle Ages, the city was a very important center for study. It was home to the Schola Medica Salernitana. This was the first medical school in the entire world.

This school was special because it was open to women. Famous women like Trota of Salerno studied there. Even during the time of the Normans, science was a major focus in the city. The city's importance helped it grow into a famous place for culture and the arts.

Salerno has a very long and busy history. People have lived in this area since pre-historic times. Long ago, the Etruscans founded a settlement called Irnthi across the Irno river. Later, the Romans built a new colony called Salernum in 197 BC.

The city was once a powerful independent land called the Principality of Salerno. In the year 1077, the Normans took control and made it their capital. For a long time, Salerno was a very wealthy and important place in the Mediterranean.

In the 1800s, the city became a center for making cloth. Many textile mills were built in the area. By 1877, there were 21 of these mills working. They employed around ten thousand people.

Because of all this work, people called it the "Manchester of the two Sicilies." This name shows how much the industry helped the city grow. The population rose from 20,000 people in 1861 to 80,000 by the early 20th century.

World War II brought big changes to the city. In September 1943, Allied troops landed near Salerno during Operation Avalanche.

The fighting caused a great deal of damage to the city. For six months, Salerno actually became the capital of Italy. King Victor Emmanuel III lived in a mansion on the outskirts of the city. This happened after Italy made peace with the Allies. The city has since rebuilt and continues to be a major part of Italy today.
