His work helped many people learn about the human body. He wrote a very large book about surgery. This book was read by many doctors across Europe. It helped shape how doctors practiced for a long time.

Guy learned about the body in several ways. He studied in Toulouse and Montpellier in France. Later, he went to Bologna to study anatomy. Anatomy is the study of how body parts work. He studied under a teacher named Nicola Bertuccio. Some say he learned surgery from books. He may have used tools to help prepare bodies for burial. He was very careful when working on living people.

In 1348, a sickness called the Black Death arrived in Avignon. Many doctors ran away from the city to stay safe. Guy de Chauliac did not leave. He stayed to treat the sick people. He watched the symptoms very closely. He found two different types of the plague. One type caused fever and spitting of blood. The other type caused boils and ulcers.

He said a surgeon without this knowledge is like a blind man carving a log. He used ideas from many old scientists to write his books. His work connects the old ways of medicine to new ideas.
