People call him "the Greater" to tell him apart from another apostle named James the Lesser. This name might mean he was older or taller. He was born into a Jewish family of fishermen. His parents were named Zebedee and Salome. Because Salome was the sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus, James was actually a cousin to Jesus. He was also the brother of John the Apostle.

James was known for having a very strong personality. Some people called him and his brother "Sons of Thunder." This nickname came from their fiery tempers.

James and John were part of a small group of three apostles. This group included Peter. Jesus allowed only these three to be present at special moments. They saw Jesus raise a girl from the dead. They also saw the transfiguration of Jesus. They were even there during his time in the Garden of Gethsemane.

History tells us that James was the first apostle to die for his faith. This is called being a martyr.

The book of Acts says King Herod Agrippa had him executed by the sword. Some thinkers believe he was likely beheaded. This happened around the year 44 AD. Some people believe his death was a mystery of divine providence. His feast day is celebrated on July 25th. Many different churches around the world celebrate him on this day.

There is a famous legend about where James is buried. Many people believe his remains are in Santiago de Compostela. This city is located in Galicia, Spain.

Legend says his followers carried his body by sea to Spain. Some stories say angels helped carry his body in a boat. In the 9th century, a man named Pelayo is said to have found his remains. Because of this, the city became a huge center for travelers. The name Santiago actually comes from the Latin name for Saint James.

Today, many people still visit his shrine through a long journey. This journey is called a pilgrimage. The paths are known as the "Way of St. James."
