James the Great was a central figure in the early Christian tradition. He was one of the Twelve Apostles, the primary followers of Jesus.

To distinguish him from another apostle named James the Lesser, he is often called "the Greater." This title likely refers to his age or height rather than his importance. James was born into a Jewish family of fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. His parents were Zebedee and Salome. Because Salome was the sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus, James was a cousin to Jesus. He was also the brother of John the Apostle.

James was known for a very intense personality. He and his brother John earned the nickname "Boanerges," which means "Sons of Thunder." This name likely refers to their fiery tempers.

James, John, and Peter formed an informal triumvirate, or a group of three, among the apostles. Jesus allowed only these three to witness specific, private events. These included the raising of Jairus' daughter and the transfiguration of Jesus. They were also present during Jesus' agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. During his ministry, James and John once asked for seats of honor next to Jesus. Jesus rebuked them, questioning if they could endure the same suffering he would face.

History records that James was the first apostle to be martyred, which means he died for his religious beliefs.

According to the Acts of the Apostles, King Herod Agrippa had James executed by the sword. Some historians, such as Henry Alford, suggest that James was likely beheaded. This event is believed to have occurred around 44 AD. The site of his martyrdom is traditionally located within the Armenian Apostolic Cathedral of St. James in Jerusalem. In that cathedral, a chapel is dedicated to him, where his head is believed to be buried under the altar. His feast day is celebrated on July 25th by many different Christian denominations.

Legend provides a dramatic account of what happened to his body after his death. One tradition claims James preached the Gospel in Hispania, which is the ancient name for the Iberian Peninsula. After his execution, his followers supposedly carried his body by sea to Galicia, Spain.

Some legends state that angels guided his body in a rudderless boat to the coast. Once the body reached land, it was reportedly buried in a location that became Santiago de Compostela. The name "Santiago" is a Spanish evolution of the Latin name for Saint James, *Sancti Iacobi*. In the 9th century, a man named Pelayo is said to have discovered the saint's remains in the Libredon forest. This discovery turned the area into a major spiritual center.

This discovery led to the creation of one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the world. The "Way of St. James" is a network of paths across Western Europe that lead to his shrine.

Pilgrims often carry a scallop shell as a symbol of their journey. In 2018, 327,378 pilgrims officially registered as having completed the final walk or bicycle ride to Santiago. The popularity of the site fluctuates based on a special calendar. When July 25th falls on a Sunday, it is considered a "Holy Year." These Jubilee years follow a specific pattern of 6-5-6-11 years. In the 2010 Holy Year, the number of pilgrims reached 272,412.

Throughout history, the image of Saint James has changed based on the needs of the time. In the Middle Ages, he was sometimes depicted as a military figure.

One legend, known as "Santiago Matamoros," claims he appeared to fight for Christian armies. This led to the creation of the Military Order of Santiago in the 12th century. The order was founded to fight the Moors in Spain. The symbol of this order is the Cross of Saint James, which features a scallop shell at the top. This shows how a religious figure can become a symbol of national identity and military honor.

Different religious groups hold various views regarding James. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that James appeared as a heavenly messenger in 1829. They believe he helped confer priesthood authority to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. In Islam, the Quran does not name the disciples specifically. However, Muslim exegesis, or detailed interpretation, often includes James in the list of Jesus' followers. This demonstrates how the legacy of James the Great continues to be studied and respected across many different belief systems and historical eras.
