It takes place 49 days after Easter. Some people count it as the 50th day. This day is also called Whit Sunday or Whitsun. It is a very important feast for many groups. For example, it is a Great feast in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Catholic Church calls it a Solemnity. Lutheran and Anglican churches also hold special festivals for it. Because the date depends on Easter, it is a moveable feast.

The holiday has deep roots in an ancient Jewish festival. This festival is called Shavuot. It is often called the Festival of Weeks. It is also known as the Feast of Harvest. In the Hebrew Bible, it happens seven weeks and one day after Passover. For a long time, it was a time for harvest celebrations. People brought the first fruits of the wheat harvest to the Temple. Later, the focus shifted to celebrating the Torah.

The Bible tells a famous story about this day in the book of Acts. The story says Jesus's followers were all together in one place. This place might have been a house or an upper room.

Suddenly, a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the room. They also saw things that looked like tongues of fire. The Holy Spirit came down upon the people. This event helped the followers speak in many different languages. This allowed them to share their message with people from many nations.

Many people were present during this event in Jerusalem. The Bible says about 120 followers of Christ were there. This group included the Twelve Apostles and Mary, the mother of Jesus. Peter stood up with the eleven apostles to speak to the crowd. He gave a sermon about the resurrection. The story says that about 3,000 people were baptized that same day.

This event is often called the "Birthday of the Church."

Today, Pentecost remains a very important time for many believers. Many Christian groups use special services called liturgy to celebrate. Some churches use red decorations to represent the fire from the story.

In many European, African, and Caribbean countries, the Monday after Pentecost is a legal holiday. Even though scholars debate some details of the story, it remains a central part of faith. It connects ancient harvest traditions to the start of the early Christian community. It shows how a single event can shape history for many centuries.
