Epiphany is a significant Christian feast day that commemorates the manifestation of Jesus Christ to the world.

The term originates from the Koine Greek word *epiphaneia*, which means a manifestation or an appearance. In classical Greek, this word could describe the appearance of the dawn or an enemy in war. However, it was most often used to describe a manifestation of a deity to a worshipper, a concept known as a theophany. In the context of the New Testament, the word refers to the birth of Christ, his appearance after his resurrection, or his Second Coming. Today, the feast serves as a way for different Christian traditions to honor how Christ was revealed to humanity.

While the essence of the feast is similar across denominations, the specific events commemorated vary by tradition.

In Western Christianity, the feast focuses principally on the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. Because the Magi represented non-Jewish peoples, this event is viewed as a physical manifestation of Jesus to the Gentiles. In contrast, Eastern Christian traditions often celebrate the feast as Theophany. This tradition focuses on the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. This event is seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God. Some traditions also include the miracle at the wedding in Cana as part of the commemoration.

The history of Epiphany shows how the holiday evolved over many centuries.

The earliest recorded reference to Epiphany as a Christian feast is from AD 361 by Ammianus Marcellinus. In the early centuries, many groups celebrated the birth and the baptism of Jesus on the same day. The theologian Epiphanius of Salamis even referred to January 6 as both Christ's birthday and his Epiphany. By the mid-fourth century, the Western Church began to separate these events by setting Christmas on December 25. This allowed January 6 to remain a dedicated day for the manifestation of Christ through the Magi and his baptism. The Armenian Apostolic Church remains an example of a tradition that still celebrates the Nativity on January 6.

Calendrical differences also affect how and when the feast is observed globally.

The traditional date for Epiphany is January 6. However, since 1970, some countries have moved the celebration to the Sunday after January 1. Other traditions follow the Julian calendar rather than the internationally used Gregorian calendar. Because there is currently a 13-day difference between these two calendars, Eastern Churches following the Julian system observe the feast on January 19. The Alawites and certain Middle Eastern Christians also observe the feast on this later date.

Various cultural customs have developed to mark the season of Epiphany.

Many Christians participate in Epiphany singing or attend special church services. Some families practice "chalking the door," which involves marking the home for a blessing. Culinary traditions include consuming Three Kings Cake, and some people engage in winter swimming. The period surrounding the feast also includes specific transitions in the home. Many in the West remove Christmas decorations on Epiphany Eve, also known as Twelfth Night, on January 5. In other countries, decorations are historically kept up until Candlemas, which marks the conclusion of the Epiphanytide season.

In the modern era, the liturgical structure of the feast has undergone several revisions.

Historically, the Latin Church celebrated the feast with an octave, a period of eight days lasting from January 6 to January 13. During this time, the liturgical color used was white. In 1955, Pope Pius XII abolished most liturgical octaves, including that of Epiphany. Later, the 1969 revision of the General Roman Calendar integrated the Feast of the Epiphany into Christmastide. This season is now defined as extending from the evening of December 24 up to and including the Sunday after Epiphany. This change helped create the separate Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which slightly altered the Western connection to the baptismal aspect of the holiday.

Ultimately, Epiphany connects various theological concepts regarding the nature of Christ.

Whether through the journey of the Magi or the waters of the Jordan, the feast centers on the Mystery of the Incarnation. It serves as a bridge between the celebration of Christ's birth and his public ministry. By focusing on different moments of revelation, the various branches of Christianity find unique ways to express the same fundamental idea of a divine appearance to the world.
