Lutheranism, also known as Evangelical Lutheranism, is a major branch of Protestant Christianity.

It emerged from the work of Martin Luther, a 16th-century German friar. His efforts to reform the theology and practices of the Catholic Church launched the Reformation in 1517. Today, Lutheranism is a global faith with approximately 90 million followers. These people are found on every continent.

The movement sought to return the Western Church to what it considered a more biblical foundation.

Theology in Lutheranism is built upon two primary pillars. The first is the formal principle, which concerns the source of authority. Lutherans believe the Bible is the final authority on all matters of faith. This is often expressed through the phrase "Scripture alone."

The second pillar is the material principle, known as the doctrine of justification. This is the belief that humans are justified by grace alone through faith alone. This process is based entirely on the basis of Scripture. This differs from the Roman Catholic view, which holds that authority comes from both Scripture and tradition.

Lutheran doctrine is clearly explained in the Book of Concord.

While Lutherans cherish tradition, they view it as subordinate to the Bible. They use tradition to help proclaim the Gospel. The faith also maintains continuity with the apostolic church. This means they affirm the writings of the Church Fathers. They also accept the teachings of the first four ecumenical councils. This approach makes the Lutheran Reformation one of the more conservative Protestant traditions.

Sacraments are central to the Lutheran life and worship.

While they are not dogmatic about the exact number, three are generally recognized. These include baptism, confession, and the Eucharist. The Eucharist is also called the Lord's Supper. Lutherans believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist through a sacramental union.

They also teach baptismal regeneration. This is the belief that the Holy Ghost cleanses people of sin during Holy Baptism. This makes the person born again and renewed.

The history of Lutheranism involves significant political and social shifts. In 1521, the Edict of Worms formalized the schism with Roman Catholicism. This edict condemned Martin Luther and banned the defense of his ideas. Those who defended him faced the forfeiture of their property.

Despite this, Lutheranism grew rapidly. It became the state church in many parts of Northern Europe. Prussia adopted it as a state church in 1525. In Scandinavia, many Roman Catholic bishops accepted the reforms. This allowed the threefold ministry of bishops, priests, and deacons to continue.

Lutheranism spread through various regions via different paths. In Scandinavia, monarchs in Denmark-Norway and Sweden adopted the faith during the 16th century. This spread into Estonia and Latvia through Swedish and Baltic-German rule. In Lithuania, the nobility often converted to Lutheranism or Calvinism. In German-ruled Lithuania Minor, Lutheranism remained a dominant branch. The faith also played a vital role in preserving the Lithuanian language.

In Denmark, King Christian III advanced the Reformation after 1536. He established that the church should rest on the pure word of God.

The term "Lutheran" actually has an interesting origin. It began as a derogatory term used by Johann Maier von Eck. He used it during the Leipzig Debate in July 1519. At that time, it was used to label a heresy. Martin Luther actually preferred the term "evangelical." This comes from the Greek word "euangelion," meaning "good news."

To avoid confusion with Reformed groups, people began using "Evangelical Lutheran." Over time, Lutherans adopted the name "Lutheran" to distinguish themselves from Anabaptists and Calvinists.

Beyond theology, Lutheranism has had a massive impact on society. It has contributed significantly to Christian hymnody and the arts.

The tradition has also driven the development of education. Lutherans operate many schools, colleges, and universities worldwide. They also manage hospitals and orphanages to serve their communities.
