A church service is a formalized period of communal worship for Christians.

While people often use the word "church" to describe a building, it technically refers to the gathering of the faithful. These services serve as a way for Christians to gather, learn the "Word of God" from the Bible, and encourage one another in their faith. Most denominations hold these services on the Lord's Day, which is usually Sunday. However, some traditions hold services on Saturdays or during the middle of the week. Many followers also attend special services on holy days like Christmas, Good Friday, or Easter.

There are many different styles of worship across various Christian traditions.

Some traditions, such as Catholic, Lutheran, and Eastern Orthodox, use liturgical worship. This means the service follows a set, formal pattern. Other traditions, like Methodists and Baptists, often use an informal style. These services frequently combine worship with teaching and may include an evangelistic component. Some groups, such as the Quakers, have no set outline at all. They allow the worship to develop as participants feel moved.

Most services are presided over by clergy, who are trained religious leaders. However, some traditions utilize lay preachers instead. In many evangelical churches, a service is typically run by a Christian pastor. It usually contains two main parts: praise and a sermon. A sermon is a talk based on the Bible. Some services also include the Lord's Supper, which is a specific religious rite. In some Pentecostal traditions, a special moment might be reserved for faith healing through the laying on of hands.

Christian worship has deep historical roots in Jewish worship practices.

The Gospels record that Jesus met with his disciples to pray, sing hymns, and share teachings. Early Christians often followed patterns of morning and evening prayer. This likely came from the Old Testament, which set a precedent for morning and evening offerings. By the second and third centuries, Church Fathers like Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian wrote about formalized services. These included prayers at specific times, such as the third, sixth, and ninth hours of the day.

Historical records provide glimpses into how these early services functioned. Pliny the Younger, a Roman official, wrote about early believers meeting before light to pray to Christ. He noted they would also reassemble to eat a common meal. The liturgical year also developed over time, covering about five months from Christmas to Pentecost. This period is linked to the work of Christ. Many of these traditions, such as the use of fixed prayer times, were familiar to the Apostles because they were originally Jews.

In recent history, the way churches use music and technology has changed significantly.

The Jesus Movement of the 1960s influenced contemporary worship styles. In the 1980s and 1990s, evangelical churches began adopting contemporary Christian music. This included styles like Christian rock and Christian hip-hop. As a result, traditional organs have often been replaced by pianos, electric guitars, and drums. During the 2000s and 2010s, digital technologies became integrated into services. Churches now use video projectors to show lyrics and social media like YouTube to broadcast services.

Church life also involves specific structures for families and community support.

Before a main service, children often attend Sunday school in a separate room for an adapted education. Many churches also provide a nursery for babies. During services, it is common for people to give tithes and offerings, which are gifts made to the church. These practices help support the community and the religious institution. Whether through formal liturgy or informal gatherings, these services remain a central part of Christian life.
