The Nativity is the story of the birth of Jesus.

This event is a very important part of the Christian faith. It serves as the main reason for the holiday called Christmas. Many people around the world celebrate this birth each year. Some Christians look at the story as a historical fact. Other scholars believe the stories are more about religious ideas. They see the accounts as ways to share deep beliefs.

Two different books in the Bible tell this story. These books are the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Both books agree on a few main things. They say Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea. They also say his mother was named Mary. Joseph was her husband and a descendant of King David. However, the two books tell very different stories. Matthew focuses on Joseph and his dreams. Luke focuses on Mary and her experience.

This account tells of wise men from the East. They followed a bright star to find the child. They brought him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew also tells of a flight to Egypt. This happened because King Herod wanted to harm the child. In the Gospel of Luke, the story feels different. An angel named Gabriel visits Mary in Nazareth. Luke describes a census that sent the family to Bethlehem. The baby was laid in a manger because there was no room.

Finding an exact date for the birth is hard. The Gospels do not give a specific day or year. Most scholars look at history to find a clue. They look at when King Herod the Great ruled. Based on this, the birth might be between 6 BC and 4 BC. Some people use the stars to guess the time. Others look at the Roman census mentioned in Luke. Because the evidence is thin, no one knows for sure.

Since the 4th century, many artists have painted this scene. In the 13th century, the style of art changed. Instead of showing Jesus as a powerful master, artists showed him as a tender child. Today, many families use small manger scenes in their homes. Some countries even use life-sized statues for displays. These traditions help people remember the stories from the Bible.
