The Nativity refers to the birth of Jesus, an event central to the Christian faith.

This event serves as the primary basis for the holiday of Christmas. It also plays a major role in the Christian liturgical year. The stories are found in the biblical gospels of Matthew and Luke. While many Christians view these accounts as historical facts, some contemporary scholars disagree. These scholars often see the narratives as theological works rather than strictly historical records. They note that the two gospels present different accounts and different genealogies.

The two gospel accounts agree on several core details. Both state that Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea. They agree his mother was named Mary and her husband was Joseph. Both accounts identify Joseph as a descendant of King David. They also agree that the birth was caused by divine intervention. However, the two accounts differ significantly in their specific details and perspectives. Matthew focuses largely on the experiences and dreams of Joseph. In contrast, Luke focuses more on the perspective and experiences of Mary.

The Gospel of Matthew contains several unique narrative elements. It describes an angel appearing to Joseph in a dream to explain the conception. It also tells of the Magi, or wise men, coming from the East. These men followed a star to find the child and offered gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew includes the story of the Massacre of the Innocents by King Herod. He also describes the Holy Family's flight to Egypt to escape Herod.

This itinerary suggests the family moved from Bethlehem to Egypt and eventually to Nazareth.

The Gospel of Luke provides a different set of details and a different journey. Luke describes the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary in Nazareth. He mentions a census ordered by Caesar Augustus that led the family to Bethlehem. Because there was no room for them, Jesus was laid in a manger. Luke also records the appearance of a choir of angels to shepherds. He includes the presentation of Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem.

According to Luke, the family returned directly to Nazareth after the birth.

Determining the exact date of the Nativity is a complex historical challenge. The gospels do not provide a specific date or year. Historians often look at the reign of King Herod the Great for clues. Based on Herod's death, scholars estimate the birth occurred between 6 BC and 4 BC. Some researchers attempt to find the date by studying astronomical alignments mentioned in the text. Others look at the census of Quirinius mentioned by Luke. However, many scholars believe the details regarding the census are in error.

Artistic depictions of the Nativity have been significant since the 4th century.

There was a major shift in artistic style during the 13th century. Earlier art often portrayed Jesus as a "Lord and Master." Later depictions emphasized his humility and presented a more tender image. This change mirrored shifts in Christian pastoral ministry during that era. Today, many people celebrate through manger scenes, Nativity plays, or large displays.

The Nativity stories also connect to broader cultural and theological themes. Some scholars suggest Luke's account was modeled to appeal to a Greco-Roman audience. For example, shepherds were seen in Greco-Roman culture as symbols of a peaceful golden age. Luke's narrative also traces a genealogy back to Adam to show common humanity. This portrays Jesus as a savior for both Jews and gentiles. The stories serve to link the birth of Jesus to ancient Jewish prophecies. This connects the event to the historical and religious identity of Israel.
