The life of Jesus is a central subject in historical and religious studies. Most information comes from the four canonical gospels in the New Testament. These texts outline his genealogy, his birth, and his public ministry. They also record his prophetic works, his death, and his resurrection. Other New Testament writings provide further details. The Pauline epistles were likely written within 20 to 30 years of each other. These letters mention key episodes like the Last Supper. The Acts of the Apostles also describes his life. It contains more references to the Ascension than the gospels do.

Historical records exist outside of the Bible as well. The historian Josephus wrote about Jesus. The Roman historian Tacitus also made references to Christ. Within the gospels, the ministry of Jesus follows a specific sequence. It begins with his baptism by John the Baptist at the Jordan River. After this, Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights in the Judaean Desert. His early period includes his first miracle at the Marriage at Cana. His ministry primarily took place in Galilee and Judea. He also worked in nearby areas like Perea and Samaria.

The genealogy and nativity of Jesus are found in two gospels. Matthew and Luke each provide a different family history. Matthew traces the lineage downwards toward Jesus. Luke traces the lineage upwards toward Adam and God. Both accounts link Joseph to King David and Abraham. However, the details between David and Joseph differ significantly. Matthew identifies Jacob as the father of Joseph. Luke states that Joseph was the son of Heli. Modern scholars view these differences in various ways. Some interpret them as literary inventions. Other conservative scholars maintain they are historical.

The birth narratives share several important common points. Both Matthew and Luke state Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Both accounts describe him having a virgin mother. In Luke, Joseph and Mary traveled from Nazareth for a census. They arrived in Bethlehem where Jesus was born in a manger. Luke mentions that angels proclaimed him a savior. Shepherds also came to adore him. Matthew describes the Magi following a star to Bethlehem. They brought gifts to Jesus, the King of the Jews. King Herod ordered the massacre of males under two years old in Bethlehem. To stay safe, the family fled to Egypt before settling in Nazareth.

Jesus began his public ministry at approximately 30 years of age. This work is often divided into geographical sections. The Galilean ministry began after his baptism. Jesus returned to Galilee from the Judaean Desert to preach. He recruited his first disciples, known as apostles, during this time. He commissioned twelve apostles to travel with him. These men eventually became the core of the early Church. In Galilee, Jesus performed many miracles and gave teachings. One famous example is the Sermon on the Mount. This included the Beatitudes, which are central to his moral teachings.

A major shift occurs halfway through the gospel narratives. This period follows the death of John the Baptist. Two key events change the direction of the story. First, Peter proclaims Jesus as the Christ. Second, Jesus undergoes the Transfiguration. During this event, three disciples—Peter, James, and John—witness his glory. After these events, Jesus begins a final journey to Jerusalem. This journey takes him through Perea and Judea. As he travels, he returns to the area where he was once baptized. This period marks the gradual revelation of his identity to his followers.

The final stage of his life is called the Passion Week. This period begins with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He entered the city to great public acclaim. However, tension with the Pharisees increased during this time. One disciple agreed to betray him for 30 silver coins. The gospels devote about one third of their text to this final week. During this time, Jesus held the Last Supper with his disciples. The following day, he was betrayed, arrested, and tried. The trial ended with his crucifixion and death.

Significant milestones follow his death in the gospel accounts. Three days after his burial, Jesus was resurrected. He appeared to his disciples and many followers. Some accounts state he appeared to around 500 people. These appearances continued over a 40-day period. Finally, Jesus ascended to Heaven. Historians estimate his ministry lasted between the years 27 and 36. These events form the foundation of Christian belief. They connect the historical accounts to the growth of the early Church.
