She is a character with many different sides. In some stories, she is a scary witch who might eat children. In other stories, she is a helpful old woman who aids the hero. This makes her a very complex person to study. Some researchers see her as a symbol of many things. They might see her as the moon, winter, or even a goddess.

She has several very unique ways of moving and living. Most people know her for her hut that stands on giant chicken legs. This house can actually turn around in an open field. Instead of riding a horse, she flies in a large wooden mortar. She uses a pestle to steer herself through the sky. She might also use a broom to sweep away her tracks.

Some tales say she has a bony leg or iron teeth. She might even live in a land beyond a fiery river.

History shows us that her name has deep roots. The word "baba" means grandmother or old woman in many Slavic languages. Scholars are still studying what the word "yaga" means. One idea is that it relates to words for a serpent. The first clear written mention of her was in 1755. This was in a book by Mikhail V. Lomonosov. In that book, she was listed among Slavic gods.
