This motif appears in many different cultures. It includes the Germanics, Celts, and Slavs. The stories usually describe a chase through the sky. A leader leads a group of supernatural hunters. These hunters are often ghosts or spirits. They might be the souls of the dead. Some tales include ghostly dogs, elves, or even fairies.

Many different figures can lead the hunt. In Germanic legends, the leader is often linked to Odin. Other stories name a king like Theodoric the Great. Some tales say the leader is the dragon slayer Sigurd. Even biblical figures like Cain or Gabriel appear in these stories. In some places, a woman leads the group. Names like Holda or Berchta are common in Germany.

Some leaders are even cursed nobles like Count Hackelberg. These figures ride through the air with their followers.

People in the past believed the hunt was a sign. Seeing the Wild Hunt could mean a big problem was coming. It might mean a war or a plague was near. Some thought it was a sign of death for a person.

Some stories say the hunt could take people away. A person might be pulled into the underworld or a fairy kingdom. It was even believed that spirits could be pulled away during sleep. This made the hunt a very serious thing to witness.

Jacob Grimm helped make the term "Wild Hunt" famous. He published his ideas in a book in 1835. Grimm studied many different myths to find patterns. He thought these stories were survivors of very old pagan beliefs. He believed the hunt was once a holy march of gods. He thought it later became a group of scary specters. Other modern scholars have different ideas about how these myths grew. They believe the stories changed and moved through different lands.

These legends are found in many specific places. In England, they have names like Gabriel's Hounds. In Scandinavia, people call it the Asgard Ride. In France, it is sometimes called the retinue of Hellequin. Even in Spain, stories from the 13th century mention an "old army." These tales link many different European cultures together. They show how people have wondered about the spirit world for a long time. The stories connect the sky, the wind, and the unknown.
