These stories come from many lands in Europe. They involve a leader who leads a group of ghosts. This group chases through the sky.

Many different people lead the hunt in these tales. In some lands, the leader is the god Odin. In other stories, the leader might be a king or a hero. Some tales say the leader is a woman, like Holda.

The hunters can be ghosts or souls of the dead. They might also be ghostly dogs, elves, or fairies.

People used to think the hunt was a sign. Seeing the hunt could mean a bad event was coming. It might mean war or sickness. Some believed it could even mean a person would die.

Some stories say the hunt could pull a person's spirit away while they sleep. In these tales, the hunt might take people to a fairy land or a place for the dead.

A man named Jacob Grimm helped make this idea famous. He studied these stories in 1835. He thought the tales were very old. Other scholars have different ideas about how these stories grew.
