In old Germanic stories, there are beings called jötunn.

Many people call them giants. But they are not always huge. Some are the same size as gods.

They often live far away from humans. They may live in mountains, forests, or near the sea. Some live in a place called Jötunheimr.

Jötunn are often seen as rivals to the gods. They can be a threat to the world. Yet, they are also part of god families. For example, the god Loki was the son of a jötunn. The god Odin also had a mother who was a jötunn.

Some stories say all jötunn came from a being named Ymir. Ymir was a very old and powerful being. When Ymir died, the gods used his body to make the world. They used his brows to build Midgard. This is the world where humans live.
