These beings are imagined as a large race of humans. They are covered in thick hair all over their bodies. Most tales say they live deep in the woods or wilderness. They might wear clothes made of green plants or moss.

Many artists show them carrying a heavy club. Some are even seen holding an uprooted tree as a staff.

There are also female versions known as wild women.

In some old books, like Arthurian romances, they act as enemies. In other places, they are seen as forest spirits. These spirits could be scary or even hunt humans. However, they could also bring good luck or bounty. In some folklore, they are called wood women or wood wives. This shows how people had many different ideas about them.

History shows these figures were very popular in art.

Since the late 1400s, many noble families used them in heraldry. Heraldry is the use of special symbols on coats of arms. Sometimes, artists like Albrecht Dürer drew them holding these shields. By 1539, the Princes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel even put them on silver coins.

Around the 16th century, people in mining areas had unique beliefs. They called the wild man of the mines the "mountain monk." These beings were seen as both dangerous and helpful. They were thought to guide humans to find valuable ore deposits. This connection between the wild man and mining is a very specific local tradition. It shows how people linked myth to their daily work.

We can see how these ideas changed over time.

In the 1500s, people began to talk about the "noble wild man." This idea was different from the scary monsters of the past. The defining trait of the figure has always been its wildness. Since the 12th century, being covered in hair was their main feature. This helped people distinguish them from other creatures like satyrs or fauns. They remain a fascinating part of how humans imagined the wild world.
