A werewolf is a person who can change into a wolf.

This change might happen by choice or by accident. Some stories say a curse causes the change. In modern movies, a full moon often triggers it. People might also change if they are bitten or scratched. This idea is called lycanthropy. It comes from Greek words meaning "wolf-man."

Many ancient stories explain how these changes work. In Greece, people told of King Lycaon. The god Zeus turned him into a wolf as punishment.

Other tales say a man could swim across a marsh to change. He would live as a wolf for nine years. If he did not eat human flesh, he could become a man again. Some stories say he would gain nine years of age.

These beliefs have a very long history. Early writers like Petronius wrote about these ideas in the first century. In the Middle Ages, the belief became very common in Europe. Many people thought werewolves were real. This was part of a time when people also feared witches. These beliefs were often linked to Christian ideas. The stories spread to the Western Hemisphere during the time of colonialism.

During the 15th to 17th centuries, there were many trials for supposed werewolves.

These trials happened in places like Switzerland. They spread across Europe and reached a peak in the 1600s. One famous case was about a man named Peter Stumpp in 1589. This event caused even more interest in werewolves. The trials finally slowed down in the 1700s. The last cases were recorded in places like Carinthia and Styria.

Today, werewolves are mostly found in stories and movies.

They moved from old folk tales into a new type of writing. This is called the Gothic horror genre. They are now a big part of fantasy and horror films. We can see how these old legends changed over time. They went from being feared as real threats to being fun characters in books.
