Some stories say this change happens by choice. Others say it happens because of a curse. In modern movies, people often show the change happening during a full moon.

These ideas are very old. In ancient Greece, stories told of people turning into wolves. One legend tells of King Lycaon. He was turned into a wolf as a punishment from the god Zeus.

Another story says a man swam across a marsh to change. He lived as a wolf for nine years. He could become a man again if he stayed good.

In the Middle Ages, many people in Europe believed these stories were real.

During this time, some people were even put on trial. These trials were often part of larger witch hunts. The belief in werewolves spread to other parts of the world too. Today, we mostly find werewolves in books and films. They are now a big part of fantasy stories.
