Most people use this word to mean magic that causes harm or bad luck. This idea is not just in stories; it has been found in many societies all over the world. Throughout history, people have used the concept of witchcraft to explain why strange or bad things happen.

For example, some cultures use it to make sense of sudden sickness or misfortune. Historians and anthropologists study these beliefs to see how humans try to understand the world around them.

There are many different ways people believe magic works. Some think witches use special objects, words, or gestures to cast a curse. This might involve using herbs, potions, or even items like hair and clothing from a person.

Other beliefs say that magic comes from an inborn power inside the person. In some parts of Africa and Melanesia, people believe an evil spirit or substance inside the body drives a person to do harm. Some even believe this substance can act while the person is sleeping. These different ideas show how complex the concept of magic can be.

Beliefs about witchcraft have existed for a very long time. Evidence of malevolent magic can be found as far back as ancient Mesopotamia. In Europe, these beliefs trace back to classical antiquity. During the medieval and early modern periods, many people in Europe were accused of using "black magic" to hurt their neighbors.

These accusations often happened because of tensions between people living in the same area. Sadly, these periods led to many witch trials and tens of thousands of executions. Over time, especially during the Age of Enlightenment, these beliefs began to fade in Europe.

Many specific details exist about how people viewed witches in the past. In Europe, people often blamed witches for illnesses in adults or children. They also blamed them when cows did not produce enough milk.

Witches were also often linked to animals. Some believed they could change their shape into animals, or that they had animal helpers called "familiars." These helpers were sometimes seen as evil spirits in animal form. In other cultures, like the Dobu people, there are specific beliefs about whether magic is done while awake or asleep.

Today, the meaning of the word has changed for some groups. Since the 1930s, followers of certain modern pagan religions identify as witches.

For these people, witchcraft is a positive part of their faith and practices. They use the term to describe their spiritual path rather than something harmful. This is very different from the old, negative meanings found in history. It shows how a single word can hold many different meanings depending on who is using it and why.
