A superstition is a belief that many people consider to be irrational.

It often involves the idea of magic or the supernatural. People might believe that certain actions can change their luck or fate. Some think they can predict the future through specific events. These beliefs often seem to clash with modern scientific knowledge. Most thinkers say these ideas do not follow the laws of the physical world. They believe there is no logical link between the action and the result.

There are different ways to group these types of beliefs. One way is through magic, which includes things like potions or charms. Another way is through divination, which is an attempt to learn the future. This might include things like astrology or using special tools to cast lots. A third way is through observances, which involve watching for signs. These signs could be the behavior of animals or even dreams. Some people also watch specific times or days to see what might happen.

History shows that what people call superstition can change over time. In ancient Rome, the word was linked to an excessive fear of the gods. Some people saw this as a lack of proper respect. Later, during the 16th century, Martin Luther used the term to criticize the papacy. In the 18th century, the thinker Diderot linked it to paganism. Even religious groups have used the word to describe beliefs that are different from their own. This shows how the label often depends on who is watching.

Many different names and dates appear in the study of these ideas. The Latin word comes from "super-stare," which means to stand over or survive. In the 1940s, a magazine called Weird Tales showed many examples of these beliefs.

Scholars like Dieter Harmening have categorized these ideas into three main groups. László Sándor Chardonnens also studied how people participate in these rituals. He noted that some require only watching, while others require active participation. These details help us see how complex these systems can be.

Scientists have even looked at how these behaviors might work in the mind. In 1948, a psychologist named B.F. Skinner studied pigeons in a lab.

The pigeons performed repetitive actions to try and get food. Even though the food came at set times, the birds acted as if their moves helped. Skinner believed this showed how superstitious behavior can form. This connects to how humans might try to influence the world around them. It is a way to look at how the mind seeks patterns.
