Most stories describe a rider on horseback who is missing their head. Some legends say the rider carries their head under an arm. Others say the rider is simply searching for their lost head. These myths have inspired many stories and characters in culture today. They appear in books, movies, and even video games around the world.

Different cultures have their own unique versions of this legend. In Ireland, the Dullahan is a demonic fairy. This figure often rides a horse while carrying his head. Some say the Dullahan is the spirit of a Celtic god named Crom Dubh. In Germany, stories from the Rhineland describe riders called revenants. These spirits wander the earth to atone for their past sins. Some German riders might warn people of danger or punish the wicked.

Other places have very specific details for their headless riders. In Scotland, a man named Ewen was lost in a clan battle. He and his horse are said to haunt the Isle of Mull. In Wales, stories include a headless woman riding a headless horse. In southern Texas, a figure called El Muerto has been known since the mid-1800s. This rider hangs his head from his saddle. His horse is said to produce lightning from its hooves.

One of the most famous versions comes from American literature. Washington Irving wrote a short story called "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" in 1820. The story features a rider who chases a character named Ichabod Crane. Some believe Irving was inspired by European folklore from the Middle Ages. Others think he may have heard rumors about a soldier from the Revolutionary War. This story has been turned into many famous films. These include a 1949 Disney film and a 1999 film by Tim Burton.

Today, the Headless Horseman remains a big part of popular culture. He appears in many different types of media for people to enjoy. You can find him in comic books like the series "Chopper." He is also a character in many video games. Some games include titles like "Assassin's Creed III" and "World of Warcraft." Even high schools use him as a mascot. In Indiana, a festival celebrates the legend every year. It is amazing how one idea can travel so far through time.
