He is usually shown as a hooded skeleton. He typically wears a long black robe. He also carries a tool called a scythe. A scythe is a tool used by farmers to cut grain. This tool is a symbol for the harvest. It shows how many souls are taken from their bodies. The image compares death to a farmer cutting through crops.

This idea grew from many older European traditions. In the 14th century, art began to connect skeletons to death. This happened during the Black Death pandemic. This was a time when many people died from a sickness. Some cultures see death as a woman. This is common in Italy and France. Other cultures see death as a man. This is common in English and Germanic cultures. Artists in the 14th century painted many skeletons. Some paintings showed a winged woman with a scythe. One famous fresco was painted before 1347.

During the Renaissance, artists combined different features together. They mixed the idea of skeletons with the scythe. They might have been inspired by ancient Greek ideas. The god Chronos was linked to time. Another figure, Cronus, was linked to the harvest. Both were known for using a scythe. The Greek god Thanatos is also related to death. In the 15th century, the Danse Macabre became popular. This was a theme showing dancing skeletons. These skeletons led people toward their graves.

Different artists created many versions of this figure. Francesco Pesellino painted a female-looking figure in 1450. Albrecht Dürer made drawings of thin, old men. In 1505, he drew a crowned skeleton on a horse. Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted a scene in 1562. This painting showed many characters with these features. An English church had a wooden figure from 1640. It showed a hooded skeleton with an hourglass. The color black became common for clothing in the 19th century. This was related to wearing black at funerals.

Today, the Grim Reaper appears in many stories. The name first appeared in English print in the 1840s. Edgar Allan Poe wrote stories with this character. Charles Dickens used a similar figure in 1843. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come wears a black cloak. Modern movies and books also use the Reaper. You can see him in the film The Seventh Seal. He appears in the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett. He is also in the game Grim Fandango. Even cartoons like Family Guy use this famous character.
