Decapitation is the total separation of the head from the body.

This event is fatal to humans and all vertebrate animals. It happens because the brain is deprived of oxygenated blood. This occurs when the jugular vein and common carotid artery are severed. Without this blood, the brain cannot perform the involuntary functions needed for the body to work.

Because the brain loses its oxygen, unconsciousness usually happens within seconds. Brain damage becomes irreversible after about three to six minutes without oxygen.

People have used beheading as a way to carry out executions.

An executioner who does this is sometimes called a headsman. Historically, people used tools like an axe, a sword, or a knife. They also used mechanical tools like the guillotine. The guillotine was designed to be a quick and painless method. It was used in France during the French Revolution. It remained a common method of execution in France until the 1970s. In West Germany, the death penalty was abolished in 1949. East Germany used the guillotine until 1966.

Humans have practiced capital punishment by beheading for many thousands of years.

The Narmer Palette from around 3000 BCE shows one of the first known depictions of decapitated corpses. The word "decapitation" comes from Late Latin roots. These roots mean "down from the head." Different cultures have viewed this act in very different ways. In ancient Rome and Greece, some saw it as an honorable death. In other times, such as during World War II, it was seen as dishonorable.

Different tools and skills changed how these events happened.

If a headsman used a sharp axe or sword, the process was quick. However, if the tool was blunt, it might take many strokes. For example, Margaret Pole reportedly required up to 10 strokes. To make sure a blow was fatal, executioners often used heavy two-handed swords. In some places, like Saudi Arabia and Yemen, beheading is permitted by national law. In Nigeria, it is a legal punishment in Zamfara State under Sharia law.

Decapitation can also happen by accident rather than on purpose.

It can result from an explosion or an industrial accident. It can even happen during a car crash. Some animals react differently to this than humans do. For instance, cockroaches can survive decapitation for a time. They do not die from the loss of the head directly. Instead, they eventually die because they cannot eat and suffer from starvation.
