Death is the end of life for a living thing. It happens when the biological functions that keep an organism alive stop working.

This process is often permanent and cannot be reversed. Some living things, like the immortal jellyfish, do not die from aging. However, they can still die from other causes. Many people study this subject in a field called thanatology.

Doctors face a hard job when deciding exactly when death occurs. In the past, they used the circulatory definition of death. This meant death happened when breathing and the heartbeat stopped.

Now, tools like CPR can sometimes restart a heartbeat. Because of this, doctors often look at the brain instead. This is called brain death. It means the electrical activity in the brain has ceased.

There are different ways to look at brain death. Some experts focus on the neocortex, which is part of the brain used for thought. Others believe all functions of the whole brain must stop. This is a more conservative definition. In the United States, the Uniform Determination of Death Act helps set a standard. This law helps doctors and families have a clear rule. It also helps with the legal steps for organ donation.

Many facts exist about how many people die. As of the early 21st century, about 56 million people die every year. By 2022, it is estimated that almost 110 billion humans have died. This is roughly 94% of all humans who ever lived. Aging is a very common reason for death. However, cardiovascular disease is the most common specific cause. This is a disease that affects the heart or blood vessels.

After death, a body goes through several natural stages. First, the skin may become pale, which is called pallor mortis. Then, the body temperature drops to match the air around it. This is known as algor mortis. The limbs can also become stiff and hard to move. This stage is called rigor mortis.

Eventually, the body begins to break down through decomposition. Different cultures have many ways to honor the dead. They might hold funerals, use cremation, or practice sky burials.
