This concept can mean many different things to different people. Some think of it as a physical body that never stops working. Others think of it as a spirit or soul that lives on. Scientists and thinkers have spent a long time debating how this might work. It is a big idea that touches on science, religion, and philosophy.

Many different faiths have ideas about eternal life.

Ancient Mesopotamians and Greeks believed that gods had physical bodies that lived forever. Some of these traditions say that gods could even give this gift to humans. In Christianity, many followers believe in a resurrection of the flesh at the end of time. Other groups, like Rastafarians, also hold beliefs about physical immortality. People have often wondered if an immaterial soul exists to carry life forward.

Some stories speak of a Fountain of Youth or special peaches. Alchemists in the 16th century even tried to make a thing called the Philosopher's Stone. Today, some scientists look toward new technologies to help humans. They talk about digital immortality, which might involve uploading a mind to a computer. Others look at cryonics, which is the hope that people could be revived in the future.

Some living things actually show what is called biological immortality.

This means they do not experience aging in the same way humans do. For example, a jellyfish called Turritopsis dohrnii can turn itself back into a baby stage. This cycle may let it live for an indefinite amount of time. Bacteria can also be seen as immortal because they split into two new cells.

These creatures do not have the same limits on cell division that humans have.

To live forever, humans would have to solve many hard problems. We would need to stop natural aging, which is caused by things like DNA damage.

We would also need to cure all diseases and prevent injuries from accidents. Even if we solved those, we would still need to find enough food and water. Changing environments could also make it hard to find the resources needed to stay alive. Scientists are still researching these many different challenges today.
