Resurrection is the idea of coming back to life after death.

This concept is different from reincarnation. Reincarnation involves a soul or deity returning to life in a new body. Some religions also believe in the disappearance of a body. In the Abrahamic religions, many people believe in a universal resurrection. This is the idea that all the dead will rise at the end of the world. This is a major part of what people believe about the future.

People view resurrection in two main ways. One way is the belief in individual souls rising right now. This is seen in ideas like Christian idealism. The other way is a general resurrection of all bodies at the end of time. In Christianity, this is often called the resurrection of the body. This term is used because many believe the soul cannot die. Therefore, the soul does not need to "return" to life. Some thinkers argue that resurrection means the soul rising from sin to grace. Others believe the soul is the vehicle that carries a person back to life.

This theme appears in many ancient cultures. In Egypt and Canaan, there were stories of dying-and-rising gods. These included gods named Osiris and Baal. Ancient Greek religion also had stories of people becoming immortal. For example, the hero Achilles was taken to the Elysian plains by his mother, Thetis. Another figure, Aristeas of Proconnesus, was said to have disappeared from a locked room. He reportedly reappeared alive years later. However, many Greeks did not think resurrection was possible or even good. The god Asclepius was even killed by Zeus for trying to raise the dead.

Christianity focuses heavily on the resurrection of Jesus. Most Christians believe he rose in a material body. However, the Watchtower Society has a different view. They believe Jesus rose as an invisible spirit being. They identify him as the archangel Michael. The Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses also holds a unique view. They believe Jesus's human body was a sacrifice that was not taken back. Instead, they say he became a life-giving spirit. These different groups use different parts of their faith to explain these events.

Other traditions also touch on these themes. In Buddhism, some Zen stories describe the power of resurrection. Hinduism uses the term saṃsāra to describe rebirth and reincarnation. In the modern world, some people look to cryonics. This is a way to try to preserve bodies for the future. However, science cannot actually bring long-dead bodies back to life today. The word resurrection comes from the Latin word "resurrectio." It literally means a "straightening from under again." This describes the act of rising up or standing up once more.
