This topic covers many different ideas. It looks at the end of human history or the present age. Some people believe the end is coming very soon. This belief is called apocalypticism. In some traditions, it is a metaphor for a spiritual change. It can mean moving from ordinary life to a reunion with a divine being.

Many religions see time as a straight line. This is called a linear cosmology. In Judaism, the "end of days" refers to the Messianic Age.

People believe this will bring justice and peace to the world. It includes the coming of a Messiah and the resurrection of the righteous. In Christianity, the end involves a period of tribulation. This happens before the second coming of Christ.

This event leads to the Kingdom of God and a new earth. Islam also has ideas about a Day of Judgment. This follows the appearance of the Masīīī ad-Dajjāl and the descent of ƚīī. This process ends with the sun rising from the west.

Other religions see time as a circle. These traditions have cyclical worldviews. This means the world goes through cycles of decay and rebirth. In Hinduism, the end of a cycle happens when Kalki arrives. Kalki is the final incarnation of Vishnu. He rides a white horse to end the Kali Yuga. After this, the world is regenerated to start again. Buddhism has a similar idea about cycles. The Buddha predicted his teachings would be forgotten after 5,000 years. Later, a bodhisattva named Maitreya will appear to find them again.

According to the Bahman Yasht, the world will face many changes before this. People might become less grateful or more deceitful. A final savior called the Saoshyant will arrive to bring the resurrection. Eventually, humanity will live without hunger or thirst. In Gnosticism, the end involves the collapse of the heavens. The darkness will dissolve to make room for something even greater.

Science also looks at how the universe might end. This became a major topic in the 18th century. Scientists began to calculate the age of the Earth. They also think about the fate of the whole universe. There are several different theories about this. One idea is the Big Rip. Another is the Big Crunch. Some thinkers also discuss the Big Bounce. There is also the Big Freeze, which is called heat death. People also study risks that could affect humans. These are called global catastrophic risks.
