Millennialism is a belief held by many different religious groups. They believe a special age is coming to Earth. This is often called a Messianic Age. People think this time will bring peace and justice to the world. Some believe this happens before a final judgment. Others see it as a permanent state of eternity. These ideas can change how people live their lives.

In Christianity, many ideas come from the Book of Revelation. One part describes an angel with a large chain and a key. He uses the key to lock Satan in a bottomless pit for one thousand years. Different groups have different ideas about this event. Premillennialists believe Christ returns before the thousand years start. They think his reign will be physical on the Earth. Postmillennialists think his reign happens through the church. Amillennialists believe the thousand years is a metaphor or a symbol.

History shows many people have held these views. In the early church, many leaders believed in premillennialism. Names like Papias and Irenaeus are mentioned in history books. Later, thinkers like Origen and Clement of Alexandria had different views. Even Augustine changed his mind over time. He once believed in premillennialism but later moved to amillennialism. This change helped make his new view very popular.

Other faiths also have ideas about special time periods. In Islam, many believe a leader called the Mahdi will come. He is expected to work with Jesus to stop unfairness. Sunni Muslims believe he is not born yet. Shia Muslims believe he is alive but hidden. In the Baha'i Faith, people believe God renews the City of God every thousand years. Zoroastrianism also speaks of many thousand-year periods. These periods end when a king of peace stops all evil.

These beliefs can lead to big movements in the world. In the 1600s, a Jewish movement centered on Sabbatai Zevi occurred. The Bible Student movement also started with ideas from Charles Taze Russell in 1886. Jehovah's Witnesses believe the Earth will become a paradise like the Garden of Eden. Some groups, like the New Apostolic Reformation, have an optimistic view of the future. These ideas show how people wonder about what comes next. They help us understand how people think about time and justice.
