Restorationism is a religious perspective about the history of faith.

Many people who hold this view believe the early church was pure. They think the original beliefs of Jesus's followers were lost or changed over time. This change is often called the Great Apostasy. Because of this, followers want to restore the original ways. They seek to fix faults in current churches by using the early church as a model. This goal is often a response to having too many different religious groups.

There are four main ways that people try to achieve this restoration. The first way is called ecclesiastical primitivism. This focuses on restoring how a church is organized and run. It might look at how leaders like elders or deacons were chosen. The second way is ethical primitivism. This group focuses on the moral rules and how followers live their lives. They might follow specific commandments or a biblical Sabbath.

The third way is known as experiential primitivism. These followers want to restore a direct experience with God. They focus on the feeling of the Holy Spirit in their lives. The fourth way is called gospel primitivism. This focuses on the core message of the faith. Martin Luther used ideas like this during the Reformation. He believed the gospel message had been hidden by the church of his time.

This idea has a very long history. These themes appeared early in church history with thinkers like Irenaeus. Some movements also used these ideas during the Middle Ages. Groups like the Lollards and the Hussites wanted to renew the church. Later, many different movements arose during the Great Awakenings. These included the Christadelphians and the Swedenborgians. Other famous groups include the Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses.

Restorationism connects to many different parts of religious history. In the United States, the Stone-Campbell Movement is a well-known example. Some groups in the 1970s also used these ideas in the United Kingdom. Even the Protestant Reformation can be seen as a form of restorationism. Some people also use the term to talk about Jewish people returning to a promised land. This shows how many different people use the idea of "restoring" to find their way back to faith.
