Polytheistic reconstructionism is a special way of practicing religion. It first appeared in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This way of thinking grew much faster in the 1990s. People use it to try and bring back old religions. They want to find the real rituals from long ago. These religions existed before the time of Christianity.

How does this work for these followers? They do not just guess about the past. They use many different types of study to find facts. They look at archaeology to find old objects. They study folklore to learn ancient stories. They also use anthropology to understand how people lived. This helps them find ways to perform rituals correctly. They want to do things the way they were done before.

History tells us how these ideas gained names. Isaac Bonewits likely came up with the term in the late 1970s. He was not sure where he first heard it. Later, Margot Adler used the term "Pagan Reconstructionists" in 1979. She wrote this in her book called Drawing Down the Moon. She said these people use research to find authentic practices. They look for facts that can be proven.

There are many specific details in this movement. Some groups follow paths like modern Hellenismos or Nova Roma. They do not try to mix all old religions together. Instead, they focus on one specific culture. They study old art, science, and politics too. This helps them understand the world of the past. They want to see the environment where people lived. This is different from historical reenactment, which is just for fun.

Why do people work so hard on this? The main goal is to build a bond with gods. They believe old rituals helped people connect with deities. They also hope to connect with good spirits. In Germanic Heathenry, they use offerings called blót. They believe these offerings bring peace and plenty. Some people call them "pagans," but some groups dislike that word. They feel the word is not a kind way to describe them.
