Wicca is a modern religion that focuses on the Earth and nature.

Scholars of religion often call it a new religious movement. It is also known as a form of modern paganism. Some people describe it as a nature religion or a mystery religion. Because it includes the practice of magic, some scholars call it a magico-religion. Many Wiccans see it as a way of life or a spirituality.

Different groups, called traditions, follow various paths within Wicca. Some traditions are very organized, while others are more relaxed.

Many Wiccans hold beliefs about a goddess and a god.

This is called duotheism, which means believing in two deities. The goddess is often seen as a Triple Goddess. She has three parts: the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. The god is often called the Horned God. He is frequently linked to animals and the natural world.

Some followers see these as many different gods from history. Others see them as one great, universal force. Some even believe in a single, complex Supreme Deity.

Celebrations in Wicca follow the cycles of the sun and moon.

Festivals based on the sun are called Sabbats. These seasonal festivals mark different times of the year. Moon cycles are known as Esbats. These are often linked to the Triple Goddess.

Wiccans might use an altar to honor these cycles. They may use symbols like the pentacle to show their respect. The pentacle is a symbol used to honor the elements and directions. These special times help followers connect with the Earth.

Wicca began to grow in England during the first half of the 20th century. Gerald Gardner is often called the "Father of Wicca." He was a retired British civil servant. He introduced Wicca to the public in 1954.

Doreen Valiente joined Gardner in the 1950s. She helped build the traditions and teachings of the faith. The name "Wicca" became popular in Britain during the 1960s. It comes from Old English words for magic-workers. The word "witch" also comes from these same old words.

Today, Wicca is the largest and most well-known form of modern paganism. It is an eclectic religion, meaning it draws from many different ideas.

This includes ancient pagan motifs and older ideas from Western esotericism. Some Wiccans belong to British Traditional Wicca, which follows Gardner's lineage. Other Wiccans follow newer, more personal traditions. While people may disagree on the exact boundaries of Wicca, it remains a major part of modern pagan studies. It continues to influence and be influenced by other faiths around the world.
