Gothic paganism was the original religion of the Goths. This was a way of life before they became Christians.

Their faith was tied to their local groups. These groups were called villages or clans, known as a Kuni. The center of their worship was a special meal. This was a ritual meal held by the villagers. A leader called a reiks led these important events. These leaders saw themselves as the protectors of their traditions.

How these beliefs worked was very tied to the people. The religion was tribal in its nature. This meant that worshiping gods and nature was the same thing. They also practiced ancestor worship. This means they honored people from their past. The Amali dynasty even treated their ancestors like gods. They were called the Ansis. The Tervingi tribe would start battles with songs for these ancestors. This helped keep the memory of their family alive.

History shows us these people lived a long time ago. The Goths first appear in records in the early 3rd century. They began to become Christians in the 4th and 5th centuries. This means we only have a small window of time to study them.

We learn about them from the 3rd and 4th centuries. During the 370s, things changed for the Goths. A leader named Athanaric fought to keep the old ways. He even persecuted Goths who became Christians. This led to a big war between 376 and 382.

We can learn about their gods through their words. The Gothic word for a pagan idol was guþ. This is where the English word god comes from. They had a war god named *Teiws. The Romans thought he was like their god Mars. Some people think they also had a god named Gaut. This Gaut might be an ancestor to the Amali family. They may have also had a god called *Fairguneis. Some scholars think this god was like Thor.

There are many ways Gothic religion was unique. For example, they did not bury weapons with their dead. Other Germanic groups in England or Germany did this. This is a big difference in how they honored the deceased. They also had stories about witches called haliurunnae. These stories were part of their old culture. Their beliefs also linked to the world around them. They may have even seen the Danube River as a god.
