Slavic paganism refers to the many beliefs and rituals of the Slavic people. These people lived across central, eastern, and southeastern Europe from the 5th to the 10th centuries.

They spoke languages that were very similar to each other. Because of this, many scholars think they shared a single religion. Some thinkers believe being a Slav was about these shared beliefs.

This ancient way of life included many different gods and spirits. Some were linked to the sky or the thunder. Others were seen in the rivers or the earth.

Many different gods played roles in their daily lives.

One famous god was named Veles. A large idol of Veles once stood in the city of Kiev. It was located near the river in a busy area for trade.

Another important god was Svarog. There were also spirits that lived in the water, like nymphs. People often made sacrifices to show respect to these beings. They also had special places called sanctuaries for their worship.

Between the 8th and 13th centuries, many Slavs began to follow Christianity. This change did not happen all at once.

In the south, groups in Bulgaria and Moravia became Christian quite early. The East Slavs in Kievan Rus' officially adopted it in 988 under Vladimir the Great. The West Slavs had a much slower and harder time changing. Some groups in the Baltic area fought to keep their old ways. They even faced the Northern Crusades during these many years.

Because the change was slow, something called "double faith" happened. This is known as dvoeverie in Old Church Slavonic.

It means people followed both the new and old ways at once. Many old ideas moved into the new Christian traditions. You can see this in the way churches were built or in how icons were painted. Some old gods and traditions lived on in folk stories. Even today, some people try to rebuild these ancient faiths through a movement called Rodnovery.

We learn about these ancient beliefs through many different sources. Since the Slavs did not leave their own books, we must look elsewhere.

Historians study old writings from people like the Byzantine writer Procopius. They also look at items found by archaeologists in the ground. Some people study old songs and folk tales to find clues. Even the names of rivers and mountains can tell us about the past. Many clever scholars have worked for years to put these pieces together.
