Vladimir started his career as the Prince of Novgorod in 970. Later, in 978, he became the Grand Prince of Kiev. His path to power was not easy or peaceful. After his father died in 972, a war broke out between his brothers. Vladimir had to flee abroad for a short time. He eventually returned with a Varangian army to take the throne.

Before he changed his faith, Vladimir followed Slavic paganism. He built a large temple on a hill in Kiev. This temple had statues for six different gods. One was Perun, the god of thunder and war. Others included the goddess Mokosh and gods named Stribog and Dazhd'bog.

Vladimir also tried to organize these different gods into one system. He wanted to connect with all the people in his land. However, some of his actions caused anger among his subjects. This period of his life was marked by many different beliefs.

Vladimir wanted to find a new religion for his people. He sent envoys to look at many different faiths. They studied Islam, Judaism, and different types of Christianity. His messengers were very impressed by Constantinople. They said the religious services there were beautiful and grand.

In 988, Vladimir made a big decision to choose Eastern Christianity. He traveled to Chersonesus to be baptized. He even took the name Basil to honor his new family. This choice changed the history of his entire region.

His conversion led to many big changes in how people lived. Vladimir destroyed the old pagan monuments and built many churches. He built the Church of the Tithes in 989.

Vladimir's life connected his land to much larger parts of the world. By marrying the princess Anna, he tied Rus' to the Byzantine Empire.
