His mother, Olga, served as regent in Kiev for many years. She ruled until Sviatoslav reached maturity around 963.

Sviatoslav was a very different leader than his mother. While Olga converted to Christianity, Sviatoslav remained a staunch pagan. He followed the old gods like Perun and Veles. He believed his warriors would lose respect for him if he changed his faith. This connection to his soldiers helped him lead many successful campaigns.

Sviatoslav was a man who preferred the life of a warrior. He had little patience for the slow work of ruling from a palace. Instead, he spent his time with his druzhina, or his circle of warriors.

He lived very simply while on his many expeditions. He did not carry heavy wagons or cooking kettles with him. He did not even use a tent for shelter. Instead, he slept on a horse blanket. He used his saddle as a pillow for his head. He often ate simple meals of roasted meat from the coals. This rugged lifestyle helped him move quickly across the land.

His military campaigns changed the map of Eastern Europe. Sviatoslav wanted to expand the reach of the Kievan Rus'. He led his armies into the Volga River valley and the Balkans.

He was very successful at conquering many different groups. He defeated the Alans and attacked the Volga Bulgars. His most famous victory was against the Khazars. The Khazars were one of the strongest powers in the region. By defeating them, Sviatoslav helped create the largest state in Europe. He even moved his seat of power to Pereyaslavets on the Danube in 969.

Sviatoslav's life was marked by specific details and strong traditions. He was described as a sturdy man with a bald head. He wore a wispy beard and a bushy moustache.

He also wore a single large gold earring with pearls. In 970, he gave different lands to his sons. He made Yaropolk and Oleg subordinate princes. He also appointed his son Vladimir as the prince of Novgorod. These decisions were meant to manage his huge new territories. However, his sudden death in an ambush in 972 changed everything.

Because Sviatoslav died so suddenly, his empire did not stay stable. He had not set up a clear way for the next ruler to take over. This led to a sad feud between his three sons.

Yaropolk and Oleg fought each other for control. Eventually, Yaropolk and Oleg both died during these struggles. His son Vladimir emerged as the only ruler. Vladimir would later go on to change the religion of the Rus' forever. Sviatoslav's life remains a major part of history because of the massive changes he brought to Europe.
