Getting to the throne was not easy for Yaroslav. He had a difficult relationship with his father, Vladimir. In 1014, Yaroslav even refused to pay tribute to Kiev. When Vladimir died in 1015, a war began between the brothers. Yaroslav fought his half-brother, Sviatopolk, for control of the throne. Sviatopolk had help from the King of Poland. Yaroslav won a battle in 1016, but Sviatopolk returned in 1018. Finally, in 1019, Yaroslav won and became the Grand Prince.

Once he was in power, Yaroslav worked to keep his lands safe. He built a long line of forts to stop nomadic tribes. These tribes were called the Pechenegs. The forts included places like Yuriev, Kaniv, and Pereyaslavl. These walls helped protect the people from attacks from the south. In 1030, he also captured the area around Tartu in Estonia. He renamed that place Yuryev to honor his patron saint. He made sure the nearby regions paid him tribute.

Yaroslav was also a leader who made many friends through marriage. In 1019, he married Ingegerd Olofsdotter from Sweden. This helped create a strong alliance with Scandinavian countries. He also married his sister, Maria, to the Polish King Casimir I. Yaroslav had many children who married into royal families in far lands. His daughter Anna became a famous figure in Europe.
