Before he ruled Kiev, he held power in other regions. He was the Prince of Rostov from 987 to 1010. He then served as the Prince of Novgorod from 1010 to 1034. His leadership helped unite several principalities for a time. Yaroslav was the son of Vladimir the Great and Rogneda of Polotsk. His baptismal name was George, named after Saint George.

His path to the Kievan throne involved a long and difficult struggle. Yaroslav had a strained relationship with his father, Vladimir. In 1014, Yaroslav refused to pay tribute to Kiev. After Vladimir died in 1015, a war broke out between Yaroslav and his half-brother, Sviatopolk I. Sviatopolk was supported by the Polish Duke Bolesław I the Brave. Yaroslav won a battle in 1016, but Sviatopolk returned with Polish troops in 1018. Eventually, Yaroslav prevailed and firmly established his rule in 1019.

Once he became Grand Prince, Yaroslav focused on strengthening his state. He used foreign policy to build alliances with Scandinavian countries. He also worked to reduce the influence of the Byzantine Empire over Kiev. In 1030, he captured the area around present-day Tartu, Estonia. He renamed this location Yuryev to honor his patron saint. He also forced nearby regions to pay him annual tribute. To defend his lands against nomadic tribes like the Pechenegs, he built a line of forts. These included Yuriev, Bohuslav, Kaniv, Korsun, and Pereyaslavl. These defenses successfully ended the Pecheneg threat to Kiev by 1036.

Marriage was another important tool in Yaroslav's political strategy. In 1019, he married Ingegerd Olofsdotter of Sweden to seal an alliance. He also arranged for his sister, Maria, to marry the Polish King Casimir I. Yaroslav had many children who married into various foreign royal families.

His daughter Anna became a notable figure in European history. His sons and daughters helped rule different parts of Kievan Rus'. Yaroslav promoted unity among his children to encourage peace. He wanted his family to maintain the stability of the realm.

Beyond war and politics, Yaroslav was a great patron of culture. He sponsored the construction of the massive Saint Sophia Cathedral in 1037. He also built the Saint George and Saint Irene monasteries. Yaroslav supported the development of early Old East Slavic literature. He helped promote the work of Hilarion of Kiev. In 1051, he promulgated a code of laws for the East Slavs. This helped create order and legal structure in the land. His focus on learning earned him the title "the Wise."

Even during his life, Yaroslav faced internal challenges. In 1024, his brother Mstislav of Chernigov defeated him in battle. This conflict led the brothers to divide Kievan Rus' between them. Mstislav ruled the eastern area near Chernigov until 1036. Yaroslav also had a difficult relationship with his youngest brother, Sudislav. He chose to imprison Sudislav for life. Despite these family conflicts, Yaroslav is often remembered as a model of virtue.
