Vladimir I Sviatoslavich, often called Vladimir the Great, was a central figure in the history of Kievan Rus'. He served as the Prince of Novgorod starting in 970. Later, he became the Grand Prince of Kiev in 978. He ruled until his death in 1015. His life involved significant political shifts and religious transformations. Because of his impact, both the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches canonized him as Saint Vladimir.

Vladimir's rise to power was marked by intense family conflict. He was the youngest son of Sviatoslav I, born around 958. His mother was Malusha, a housekeeper described in Norse sagas as a prophetess. After Sviatoslav died in 972, a war erupted between Vladimir's brothers, Yaropolk and Oleg. This conflict forced Vladimir to flee abroad temporarily. He eventually assembled a Varangian army to return and depose Yaropolk. In 978, he successfully took Kiev and became the ruler of all Kievan Rus'.

Before his conversion, Vladimir practiced Slavic paganism. He attempted to organize these beliefs into a single system. He built a large temple on a hill in Kiev dedicated to six gods. These included Perun, the god of thunder and war. He also included Stribog, Dazhd'bog, Mokosh, Khors, and Simargl. Some of these deities had Iranian origins. Vladimir's attempts to manage these various gods caused tension. His actions led to the deaths of early Christians, such as Fyodor and Ioann.

Vladimir eventually sought a new religious direction for his realm. According to the Tale of Bygone Years, he sent envoys to study several major faiths. They investigated Islam, Latin Christianity, Judaism, and Byzantine Christianity. The envoys were most impressed by the services in Constantinople. They described the experience as feeling like being in Heaven. In 988, Vladimir negotiated to marry Anna, the sister of Byzantine Emperor Basil II. To complete this union, Vladimir traveled to Chersonesus to be baptized. He took the Christian name Basil during this ceremony.

This conversion triggered a massive cultural and religious shift. Vladimir destroyed pagan monuments and replaced them with churches. He founded the Church of the Tithes in 989. He also baptized Pecheneg princes, including Metiga and Kuchug. His religious leadership extended to social reforms. He used his position to practice acts of charity. He provided food and drink to the less fortunate. He also established ecclesiastical courts to manage religious matters.

Vladimir's governance included significant legal and educational changes. He introduced the Byzantine law code to his territories. However, he chose to reform its most severe aspects. He famously abolished capital punishment, judicial torture, and mutilation. He also ordered that the children of nobles receive an education. This led to increased literacy across various parts of Rus'. These changes helped create the first native works of literature in the region.

In his later years, Vladimir managed complex international relations. He maintained peace with leaders like Bolesław I of Poland and Stephen I of Hungary. He also sent 6,000 troops to assist the Byzantine Empire during a revolt. His reign was mostly stable, except for incursions by the Pechenegs. In 1014, a conflict began with his son, Yaroslav the Wise. However, Vladimir fell ill and died at Berestove before the conflict could conclude. His life remains a bridge between the pagan past and the Christian future of Eastern Europe.
