The history of Poland changed forever when it adopted Christianity. This big change is often called the Christianization of Poland.

It started with a very important event called the Baptism of Poland. This was when the first ruler of the Polish state, Mieszko I, joined the faith.

His choice helped the new country join other established groups in Europe. It also helped the ruler bring his people together under one belief. This process helped make Poland a recognized part of the European scene.

The ceremony for Mieszko I happened on April 14, 966.

This date fell on Holy Saturday. Before the water was used, there was a week of teaching and fasting. During the ceremony, water was poured over groups of men and women. Some people think their heads might have been dipped into the water instead. They were also anointed with a special oil called chrism. Historians are not sure exactly where this happened. They think it was likely in the cities of Gniezno or Poznań. Some even suggest places like Ostrów Lednicki or Regensburg.

Many people believe Mieszko's wife, Dobrawa of Bohemia, helped him decide.

She was a very strong Christian. Before Christianity arrived, different pagan tribes lived in the land. They worshiped different gods, such as Svetovid. Christianity likely began to spread around the late 9th century. This was when the Vistulan tribe met the Christian state of Great Moravia. The influence of the Czechs helped bring these new ideas to Polish lands. Mieszko used this new faith to strengthen his power and his government.

Spreading the religion was a very long and difficult job. It took many decades for the whole country to change. In the 10th and 11th centuries, many churches and leaders were appointed. Pope John XIII appointed Jordan as the first Bishop of Poland in 968. Later, Mieszko's son, Bolesław I the Brave, helped send missions to other lands. He even set up the Archbishopric of Gniezno in the year 1000. Most people in Poland were not Christian right away. In fact, there was a big uprising against the change in the 1030s. In the area of Pomerania, the change was even slower.

By the 13th century, Roman Catholicism was the main religion in Poland. This history is still remembered by people today. In 1966, Poland celebrated the 1,000th anniversary of the baptism.

This was a huge event with many different celebrations. The Church focused on the sacred side of the history. However, the Communist government focused on the history of the Polish state. They even had a massive military parade in Warsaw. This parade was one of the largest in the history of the country. It showed how much the past still matters to the people.
